Biometano para transporte pesado: a estratégia de pricing da G3 que garante poupanças face ao diesel

This pioneering operation marks a new step in G3 | Go Green Gas’s commitment to diversifying low-carbon mobility solutions and developing a national market for renewable gases.

G3 | Go Green Gas completed the first sale of e-methane (or renewable synthetic methane, RFNBO) for transportation in Portugal, totaling 65 MWh. The transaction represents a pioneering milestone for two reasons: it is the first sale of e-methane for mobility in Portugal, and—since there is no record of any previous e-methane sales in the country—it is also the first e-methane sale ever conducted in Portugal.

E-methane is a renewable gas produced by combining renewable hydrogen with biogenic carbon dioxide through a methanation process. Because it is compatible with existing infrastructure and equipment for natural gas and biomethane, it can play a significant role in the decarbonization of sectors where electrification faces greater challenges, particularly heavy-duty road transport.

The entry of this renewable energy into the Portuguese market through G3 reinforces the need for an increasingly diversified energy supply capable of meeting the various demands of the energy transition. The 2024–2040 Biomethane Action Plan already recognizes renewable gases, including biomethane and e-methane, as a pathway to decarbonizing the economy, with particular relevance for industry and mobility.

The elimination of Guarantees of Origin ensures the traceability and certification of the renewable origin of the energy associated with the e-methane used in transportation, enhancing the transparency and credibility of the solution among consumers and operators.

This initiative is part of G3 | Go Green Gas’s strategy to accelerate the adoption of renewable gases and reduce the carbon footprint of transportation—particularly in the heavy-duty segment—while balancing environmental sustainability, operational viability, and competitiveness.

G3 thus reinforces its pioneering position in the commercialization of alternative renewable energies in Portugal after having pioneered biomethane in 2023 (following a trial in 2021), and now assumes a leading role in harnessing the potential of renewable gases and creating new alternatives for the decarbonization of mobility.
